ND Operations Manual
Ellie Systems Boeing-Style ND v1.1

(Updated June 24th, 2008)

 (Caution: Ink-Usage Alert!)

The ND is perhaps the simplest instrument to implement, but it does have a wide array of display elements to keep even the seasoned pilot busy. We hope you find this manual easy to understand and perhaps even enjoyable.

For a more in-depth (and much more interesting) read on the ND  Please visit Captain Mike Ray's website and take a look at some of the available downloads, especially the  NAV (& EFIS) Displays

Using the ND with SA_WXR... (And soon to be 'other' 3rd-party radar imaging tools!)

Author's note:
On a somber note, we just learned as of this writing that the SA_WXR program will no longer be offered for sale. Rest assured that we are still leaving in the functionality to integrate with existing SA_WXR versions.

SA_WXR is implemented in the Ellie Navigation Display only in it's most basic form. Due to some unrelated factors,  we decided not to pursue some of the more intricate interfacing t this time.

There are only 3 rules to follow to get SA_WXR integrated into the ND... They are as follows:

1.  Be sure the Weather Bitmap is created in C:\Weathermaps (See SA_WXR docs on how to...)
2. Be sure the Ellie ND can "See"
C:\Weathermaps !!
3. If you decide to use a different directory, PLEASE see rule #1...

Reason is, since changing where the ND 'sees' the "wx.bmp" image file requires a small registry change, we decided it would be best to just not go down that road in the first place.

Proceed ONLY if you are comfortable with working in the registry!... You can seriously render your computer a nice warm piece of plastic if you are not careful. Don't say we didn't warn you!

The key is here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Ellie Systems\BOEING\ND\Left\ (...and Right)

In this location you will find this key:
"weathermap" (Without the quotes)

It should be default to: (Unless you change it to your liking)
"C:\\Weathermaps\\wx.bmp" (Without the quotes, and notice the DOUBLE backslashes...)

If you change this registry element, be sure to use "Double Backslashes" as the ND will interpret these correctly... (eg "C:\\Weathermaps\\wx.bmp")

Using the ND with SquawkBox 4.x format Flight Plans...

We'll keep this part simple. The Ellie ND will read the a flightplan created using the "legacy" SquawkBox 4 format. There are numerous Flight Plan creators on the market that can generate such a format, such as FSBuild.

deja Vu Time...
That said, there are only 3 rules to follow to get a Flightplan to display in the ND... They are as follows:

1.  Be sure the flightplan.sbp is created in whatever directory you selected during the install

(You can retrieve this information simply by pressing "u" when the ND is loaded and running)

2. Be sure the Ellie ND can "See" the directory where you have these flightpans installed!!

Proceed ONLY if you are comfortable with working in the registry!... You can seriously render your computer a nice warm piece of plastic if you are not careful. Don't say we didn't warn you!

If you ever need to go back and change where the ND "sees" flight plans and you are comfortable with working in the registry,

The key is here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Ellie Systems\BOEING\ND\Left\ (...and Right)

In this location you will find this key:
"FlightPlan" (Without the quotes)

It should be default to: (Unless you change it to your liking)
"flightplan.sbp" (Without the quotes)

Working with Flightplans...

For Flightplans that are located on the same computer as the Ellie ND executable:
If you change this registry setting, be sure to use "Double Backslashes" as the ND will interpret these correctly... (eg "C:\\Flightplans\\flightplan.sbp")

Working with Flightplans (Advanced Network-guru-users!).
For Flightplans that are located on a DIFFERENT computer: (For advanced users!)
If you have a different computer (Perhaps a dedicated Instructor Station called "SpareGuy01")

1. Make sure you share out the folder where the flightplan will be located
2. Make sure the computer running the ND can "See" the share
3. In the ND computer's registry under:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Ellie Systems\BOEING\ND\Left\ (...and Right)

...enter the following:

//SpareGuy01/Flightplans/flightplan.SBP

(Forward-slash size added for emphasis)
..Notice the use of the ever-mysterious FORWARD-Slash! Yeah.. It works.. can't explain why..
